The Invisible Threats

Chlorine, Fluoride, Arsenic, Parasites...

Do any of these sound familiar? These among many others are some of the most common contaminants found in drinking water today. So, what do these contaminants have to do with you? Well let’s explore the health defects that are associated with each.

We will start with a very popular one, Chlorine…

What is chlorine? Chlorine is a very potent yellow-greenish gas. The chemical holds a reputation for being one of the most effective agents in water decontamination.
Chlorine kills off a plethora of bacteria found in drinking water today. Studies have indicated that the use of chlorine in drinking water has been extremely effective in minimizing the risk of fatal infections. Although chlorine has a legitimate track record for killing deadly bacteria, it too is associated with some health concerns. Naturally water contains organic matter. When chlorine comes in contact with organic matter, it can form what is known as chloramines. Chloramines have been known to cause respiratory complication, kidney problem, as well as birth defects. The risk of cancer is also much higher for people who drink chlorinated water regularly compared to those who do not.

Now let's explore a contaminant you often hear about during a dentist visit, Fluoride...

Fluoride is a compound added to drinking water for the sole purpose of maintaining dental health. It aids in the reduction of tooth decay in both children and adults. although there are regulations put in place for how much fluoride is added to drinking water, there is no way of regulating how much fluoride a person actually consumes on the receiving end of the water. Exposure to elevated levels of fluoride is said to be the cause of several disruptions with brain function.  It also has an effect of your bones, causing them to become brittle over time. There are plenty of other sources other than drinking water that people can receive fluoride from. Adding it to water does not serve much of a benefit and seems to do more harm than good...just an observation of mine.

Next is Arsenic...

People are becoming more and more aware of the presence of arsenic in drinking water. Arsenic is an extremely harmful contaminant in drinking water. Arsenic is a known carcinogen and can cause several types of cancer such as, skin and prostate cancer.

Finally we have these little critters called Parasites...

Parasites are organisms that live off of other organisms. Two of the most common found in drinking water are Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Both of these parasites cause diseases in the intestinal tract. The last thing you want to do is have these little parasites running rampant inside of you and multiplying. There are millions of contracted illnesses in this country alone that are attributed to the exposure of these two parasites.

Again, these are just a few of the contaminants found in drinking water. It is important that we educate ourselves on what we put into our body so that we can make a more conscious effort to be healthy. We all drink water and therefore should be well versed on the type of water we are drinking. I encourage you to research what contaminants are found in your local municipal drinking water, and share with others who may be unaware. Multipure water filtration systems remove all of these contaminants from water to provide healthy and safe drinking water to you, your family, and friends.

Tap Out!!!

The water that residents of California's largest cities get from their taps might meet most government safety standards, but it still poses some health risks and needs to be treated more thoroughly, according to a study scheduled to be released today by an environmental organization.

The report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, titled "What's on Tap," concluded that antiquated waterworks and pollution are combining to affect the quality of drinking water residents receive in many cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Though many urban residents can drink tap water without serious threats to their health, the study concluded that some contaminants still pose a risk, especially to infants, pregnant women, and people with AIDS or other immune system deficiencies. In Fresno, the study found, the risk may be substantial.

The study concluded that pollution from farm and industrial sources was a health concern, particularly for children and pregnant women. Fresno water showed "repeated problems" with nitrates, pesticides and industrial chemicals.

The findings were the result of a national review of tap water data from 19 cities, but the group is only releasing the California results now -- a decision, it says, that is tied to the timing of Proposition 50, a ballot measure that would authorize funds to improve water treatment. Voters next Tuesday will decide the measure's fate.

"There are still significant risks from contaminants," said Natural Resources Defense Council senior attorney Erik Olson, one of the study's authors. "The other issue is that because of deteriorating infrastructure, and the need to improve pipes underground, things are likely to get worse unless significant improvements are made.

"It's like someone that hasn't brushed their teeth in years," he added, laughing. "It may be hidden for a while, but eventually it's going to catch up with you."

Los Angeles received generally fair marks in the report, though it cited noteworthy amounts of arsenic and byproducts of disinfectants in the water supply, among other chemicals. The amounts were all within federal standards. The city received good marks for its annual "right to know" tap water reports to the public.

San Diego got a similar grade, though the study noted that in some areas the chemical perchlorate was present in levels higher than a new state standard for government action. And San Francisco received a more critical assessment, which noted that city water does not meet a new standard for byproducts of disinfection known as trihalomethanes that have been linked to cancer. The city has obtained an extension to meet the standards.

What You Don't Know Can Hurt You

Last week I spoke about the importance of water in the body and how essential it is for survival. So we all drink (or at least think to drink) some amount of water every day - some more than others. How many times have you stopped and questioned, “what exactly is in this clear liquid that is so essential to my health?"

Often times, we turn towards "healthy alternatives" such as bottled water and or filtered water which takes the place of the tap. But, contrary to popular belief, the so called clean drinking water alternatives can very well be just as bad as or even worse than tap water.

So let’s focus our attention on Bottled water. So many people in the world today buy bottled water because it is deemed as a clean drinking water source that people can trust. A once free natural resource that all could partake in has transformed into a multi-billion dollar industry because of the $3.99 + crv that we pay for bottled water at our local grocery store. Bottled water is purchased on faith rather than facts and so many of us believe in the misconception that bottled water is the best way to cleaner drinking water – WRONG!!!...

Truth be told, bottled water is actually less regulated than tap water. Billions of bottles of water are consumed every week. Kudos to the populous for drinking the water and staying hydrated but then here is the real questions, " where are those bottles going and better yet, how did the water end up in the spherical plastic compartments in the first place?" Now I could go into the whole process of how plastic water bottles are made and what happens before they are shrink wrapped in cases of 6, 12, or 24, but It’s a lot more interesting and exciting when you do the research for yourself.

When I say bottled water is purchased on faith rather than facts essentially what I mean is that there is only a small percentage of people who know what contaminants bottled water actually removes – there is more than just chlorine in your water.  Studies show that more than 30% of all bottled water is nothing more that repackaged tap water. So that nice cold 1liter bottle of water that you just picked up from the grocery store for $1.50 could very well be the exact same municipal water that you get from your faucet with a few additives to make it somewhat palatable.

So what can you do? There are so many other environmental and health concerns associated with bottled water that we just don’t know about. The bottled water industry spends billions of dollars each year to make sure that the right appealing propaganda is going out to consumers and consequently, we listen. But if you do your research, you’ll find that there is a solution. The best alternative to cleaner, cheaper, and safer (based on the facts and research) drinking water is a water filter. But be cautious about the filter you purchase…Next week, “The Most Effective Filter on the Market”

I am Water and so are You

I never really understood the importance of water in my life until I decided one day to really investigate what my body is composed of and how much of that composition is WATER!!!

Here is a synopsis of what I discovered about myself and every human being...

  • The Human body is made of up to 60% water.
  • The Brain is composed of 70% water. Add 20 percent to that and you have the amount of water that the lungs are composed of. That's right, 90%!
  • Our blood is made up of over 80% of water.
  • Water is very essential to our digestive system and  regulation of body temperature.
The facts and statistics about the importance of water in the body are seemingly incessant. However statistics show that we don't drink enough water. A good rule of thumb that I've picked up is to drink 0.5 ounces for each pound of your body. So if you weight 210lbs. then you should be drinking at least 105oz. of water a day at least (but the more the better), you get the picture.

But all water isn't "Good Water" – Stay tuned for next week’s blog post.
